Market Charter Granted

King Henry III grants Otley the right to hold a market, helping establish the town as a centre of trade and commerce. Markets remain at the heart of town life almost 800 years later.

1228 →

Building of Otley Bridge

The Archbishop of York commissions Otley Bridge, creating a vital crossing over the River Wharfe and strengthening the town’s connections with the wider region.

1230s →

The Medieval Town Grows

Burgage plots are laid out along Boroughgate, Kirkgate and Walkergate, attracting merchants and tradespeople and creating the street pattern that still shapes Otley today.

1855 →

The Railway Arrives

Otley railway station opens, connecting the town to Leeds, Bradford and the wider railway network, bringing new opportunities for trade, travel and industry.

1900 →

Otley’s Industrial Peak

By the turn of the century, printing machinery has become Otley’s largest industry, employing thousands of people and exporting the town’s innovations around the world.
